RICHMOND -- A new bill in the General Assembly could determine who controls future tolling in Hampton Roads.
House bill 1253 creates the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission.
The group would be made up of mayors from all over the region, along with several state legislators.
The commission will figure out how and where to use new transportation dollars. It would also mean the decision to toll would be made at the local level.
"This is what they should have been doing along," said Portsmouth resident Dana Parker. "We should be the ones deciding where tolls are."
Unlike the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization, this new entity will have the ability to not only pick important projects across the region, but to fund them too.
