YORK COUNTY--A $25 million project to widen a section of Rt. 17 in York County is underway.
The work will widen a 2.8 mile stretch of George Washington Highway from four lanes to six.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is trying to limit inconveniences by keeping lane closures on weekdays from 7 p.m to 5 a.m. But some residents and shop owners told 13News Now there are still traffic slow downs and obstacles.
"We've needed this for the last 20 years, " said Judy Gaul of York County. "It will be worth."
The owners of Bathroom and Backslash said they don't mind the traffic at all.
"It slows everything down here. They can look into my windows, that's all I need." said Stewart Diesel-Reynolds, whose shop recently moved to its current location.
The work is expected to be finished in 2016.
