UPDATE 12/17: The Coast Guard says they are monitoring salvage attempts Wednesday of the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure, which ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C.
Personnel from Bald Head Island Transportation attempted to re-float the Adventure at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday during high tide without success.
The owner of Bald Head Island Transportation is working to submit a salvage plan of the Adventure for Coast Guard approval before any additional action is taken.
SOUTHPORT, N.C. (AP) -- A private ferry serving Bald Head Island has run aground near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, injuring several passengers.
Bald Head Island Limited spokeswoman Joyce Fulton said the 64-foot ferry Adventure ran aground Tuesday shortly after departing Southport at 9 a.m.
At least 30 people were on the ferry at the time of the accident. Fulton disputed earlier reports that some passengers had been thrown into the water by the impact.
Coast Guard officials said three vessels responded and transported 14 injured passengers back to Southport, where ambulances were waiting.
Brunswick County spokeswoman Amanda Hutcheson said one person was airlifted from the scene with potentially serious injuries.
Water temperatures on Tuesday were about 50 degrees. The ferry ride between Southport and Bald Head is typically takes 20 minutes.
