Update 2:45 p.m.:  Leslie Gatling Jr. was arrested by Portsmouth police around 2:30 p.m.

PORTSMOUTH -- Portsmouth Police are searching for a man who is wanted in connection with an early-morning abduction attempt in the 100 block of Beacon Road.

According to police spokeswoman Misty Holley, 48-year-old Leslie Thomas Gatling Jr. tried to abduct a teenage girl who was walking to her school bus around 9 a.m.

Holley says Gatling approached the teen and asked her to go with him.  When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly grabbed her arm and tried to pull her into the car.

The victim was able to get away and ran to the bus stop at the corner of Elliott Avenue and Beacon Road, where other students were standing.

Holley says once the girl arrived at Woodrow Wilson High School she told the school resource officer.

Gatling is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, approximately 240 pounds, and has brown eyes and black hair.

Gatling is currently wanted on charges of abduction and assault and battery.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
