PORTSMOUTH -- Some Portsmouth residents are getting calls saying pay up or go to jail for missing jury duty.

Captain Lee Cherry with the Sheriff's Office says the caller identifies himself as a lieutenant with the police department and says the person needs to pay about $500 for missing jury duty or be arrested.

The caller also asks for credit card information and social security numbers.

Capt. Cherry says the Sheriff’s Office does not issue warrants for missing jury duty and the Police Department will never contact you by phone concerning missing jury duty.

If you've received this call, try to get the number of the person who called and contact the Portsmouth Police at 757-393-5300.
