VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police arrested 48-year-old Bryan Lowe Monday after he allegedly tried to abduct a baby from father in the Sherwood Lakes subdivision.

Officers said the incident took place a little before 10:00 a.m. in the 2200 block of Locksley Arch. Several neighbors told 13News Now the supposed attempt was made behind a home there.

Police explained a man, believed to be Lowe, came up to the father, who had the baby in the back of his vehicle.

Lowe supposedly started to the father, pulled out a handgun, and threatened to take the baby.

"He walked up to the guy, holding his gun, showing of his gun in his shirt, acting like he was going to do something with him. He said, 'I want your boy,' and stuff like that," shared neighbor Jamie Garfalo.

Garfalo is friends with a woman who would help the father eventually. He flagged her down to call 9-1-1. She shared her account on Facebook, which made the rounds with homeowners through social media and emails.

"He made sure he got his kid safe. He hid his kid. He locked him in the house, and, like, he grabbed his gun to protect," said Garfalo. "He wasn't worried about himself. He was worried about protecting his kid, and to me that speaks a lot."

The father met up with the neighbor with the cell phone in front of the family's house. He and she were able to tell a dispatcher what happened and give descriptions that police say matched Lowe and his truck: a white man, in his 40s, with short hair, dressed in a turquoise shirt, driving a large red Ford pick-up truck with a black grill.

Police said Lowe left the neighborhood, but dispatchers were broadcasting information about the incident over the radio. An officer spotted the truck about two miles away and stopped the suspect at Princess Anne Road and General Booth Boulevard.

Some people in the neighborhood said they've seen Lowe walking in the neighborhood before. Some talked to him and said he seemed like an all-right guy.

Lowe has been charged with Attempted Abduction and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. He's being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond. He agreed to do a jailhouse interview with 13News Now but changed his mind Monday night.
