Three dead including officer, 17-year-old and suspect in Norfolk shooting incidents

6:40 a.m. UPDATE:  The shooting of a teenager in his car was the first incident of a very violent night in the city of Norfolk. 17-year-old Mark Rodriguez was shot and killed in his vehicle by 29-year-old James Brown, according to Norfolk Police Chief Michael Goldsmith. That incident happened on Chesapeake Blvd.

Goldsmith says Rodriguez was "In the wrong place at the wrong time."

Police responding to that incident found Brown's vehicle in the 7400 block of Wellington Road, near where he lived.

35-year-old police officer Brian Jones, responding to the scene, was shot multiple times by Brown, according to Chief Goldsmith. An off-duty officer responding to the scene, 28-year-old Curtis Allison, was also shot.

The suspect Brown was shot and killed by police officers.

Officer Jones died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He is survived by his wife and three children.

"He's trained, he responded, he did everything he was supposed to do," said Chief Goldsmith.

"The city will come together. We will begin to digest and understand what happened.", said Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim in an early morning press conference.

Police are still processing three different scenes, all in the vicinity of Tidewater Drive, Wellington Road, and Little Creek Drive.  More details are expected to be released later on Saturday.


6 a.m. UPDATE: Norfolk Police have identified 35-year-old Officer Brian Jones as the police officer who was shot and killed in a shootout with a suspect in the area of Wellington Road & Tidewater Drive overnight. The suspect was killed as well.

4:45 a.m UPDATE:  Norfolk Police will hold a 6 AM news conference on the death of a police officer and at least one suspect that occurred in the area of Wellington Road & Tidewater Drive. We will have live coverage of that police news conference on ABC13,, and the WVEC News app.

2 a.m. UPDATE: An officer has died following last night's officer-involved shooting in Norfolk, according to police spokesperson Karen Parker-Chesson. A second officer remains in serious condition. 


12:50 a.m. UPDATE: Police in Norfolk are searching for a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous near Wellington Road and Tidewater Drive. Residents are being advised to stay inside their homes. 

At least two police officers were shot following a traffic stop and foot pursuit at the intersection of East Little Creek Road and Galveston Boulevard, according to police spokesperson Karen Parker-Chesson. Their conditions are currently unknown.

At least one suspect has been killed, Parker-Chesson said. 


NORFOLK -- Police are responding to an officer-involved shooting in the 7400 block of Wellington Road in Norfolk. 

Emergency personnel responded to the incident just before 11 p.m., according to Karen Parker-Chesson with the Norfolk Police Department. One suspect has been shot.

Police also responded to a second scene at the intersection of East Little Creek Road and Galveston Boulevard.
