UPDATE 12/28 12:15 PM:  Police say there were miscommunications between the child's grandfather and mother.  The grandfather took all the children to the playground for play.  The older children assisted the grandfather in watching the younger ones and when they were getting ready to return three year old Maki was overlooked and left behind.  The grandfather thought he was with his mother.

There will be no charges currently pending in this investigation.  The child will remain in protective custody over the weekend and final determinations will be made next week.

NEWPORT NEWS -- Police in Newport News are trying to locate the parents of a child who was found alone near Sedgefield Elementary School Friday afternoon. He told officers his name was "Malik" and that he is three years-old.

According to a news release, a Newport News man and his daughter saw the child alone near the playground's dumpster just before 4 p.m. We're told they searched around the school trying to find the boy's parents, but were unsuccessful.

At that point, at around 4:45, they called police, who subsequently canvassed the surrounding neighborhood trying to get any info they could about the child, but had no success. They then contacted CPS (Child Protective Services) who responded and took custody of the boy.

According to a police spokesperson, Malik could not provide his parents names, address or neighborhood. Also, there have been no reports of missing children in the cities of Newport News or Hampton.

Police are asking anyone who can identify this lost child to contact police at 247-2500.
