NORFOLK -- Emergency crews determined a suspicious item found on railroad tracks in Huntersville Saturday evening was not a threat.
Police department spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson said the Emergency Operations Center got a call about an "explosive device" shortly after 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
When crews got to Galt and Barre Streets, they found what appeared to be a PVC pipe positioned on the train tracks.
At least 10-20 homes near the tracks were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Emergency workers determined the item was not an explosive and did not pose a threat to people in the area. They believe it may be a piece of railroad equipment.
People who left their homes were able to return to them shortly before 8:00 p.m.
