CHESAPEAKE-Fire destroyed two businesses in Chesapeake early Monday.
Crews were called to 3503 Franklin Street at 2:24 a.m. and when they arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was fully involved, said Capt. Scott Saunders.
Jerry Kilyk lives just yards from the structure and called 911 when he heard the first boom.
"In less than 20 minutes the whole building was engulfed with flames," Kilyk said. "It was one huge dark tornado cloud with all the embers. It was blowing directly between the houses."
Two businesses are in the building -B & G Bus & Truck Repair and Bray Restoration Specialists. Several vehicles at those businesses were either damaged or destroyed, including two charter buses, Capt. Saunders added.
E. J. Bray said he lost about $100,000 worth of equipment and supplies in the fire, but he has insurance.
He says he is more concerned about Blanchard's B & G Bus and Truck Repair shop.
"He just told me he didn't have any insurance. This was his livelihood. You have a a couple of guys that are staring at no employement, no livelihood. They got nothing," Bray said.
Firefighters had the fire under control by 3:15 a.m., but they believe the building is a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
