NORFOLK-VDOT is moving forward with paving at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and hope that drivers won't face gridlock like they did last month.
I-64 East will be closed weekend nights October 19-22. Closures start at 9:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday; the road will reopen Monday at 4:00 a.m.
The paving operation requires crews to mill and place new asphalt overlay in the left lane inside the eastbound tube. During the closure, traffic safety items will be replaced including pavement markings.
VDOT advises that eastbound drivers will be detoured to the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel during those hours. Officials say drivers using the M&M should expect up to a half-mile delay while the HRBT eastbound is closed.
Official note that no work will be done at the James River Bridge during these three days to help avoid backups at the M&M.
