VIRGINIA BEACH -- Construction projects and school bus stops don't mix, according to some Virginia Beach parents, and they want to see a change.

The intersection near Princess Anne Road and Kempshire Lane is currently the site of heavy equipment and mounds of dirt.  Some parents say their children's safety is at risk.

"They are five year old kindergartners, and it's bad enough that they are being picked up on a main road. Now they are being picked up on a main road that is a construction site," said Kimberly Johnston.

Since the beginning of the year, the children had to wait for the school bus in the middle of a construction site.

"They are constantly falling and getting muddy and going to school covered in mud," Johnston added.

Johnston called the school district to see if the bus could go into the neighborhood to pick up the children.

A spokesperson for the school district explained that since their neighborhood is on a dead end street, the driver was following school policy - which is to not make stops on dead end streets.  However, the school district made an exception in this case, and the driver has since been made aware of this.

Starting Monday, all buses on that route will pick up students in the cul-de-sac.
