PORTSMOUTH – The City of Portsmouth got some good news from the Centers for Disease Control. It’s getting a $75,000 Achieve Grant to create new initiatives aimed at health issues like childhood obesity.
At Parkview Elementary School Tuesday, officials introduced the steering committee or chart team, which will prioritize health issues and map out a three-year action plan.
"Projects like this will help communities implement change -- safe places to play, lighted playgrounds, healthy options for eating. This is a great first step," said Dr. Donald Lewis of EVMS and CHKD.
The team wants to get the entire city on the bandwagon and create programs that deal with everything from city policies to second-hand smoke.
CINCH, the Consortium for Infant and Child Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School, will manage the grant.
