DARE COUNTY, NC - Hatteras Island opened to visitors Friday, but ferry service was bogged down because it's the only way to and from the island.

The Bonner Bridge was closed because of overwash on NC12 and could be remain closed until Thanksgiving.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Ferry Division is adding three runs to the Stumpy Point-Rodanthe emergency route as of Saturday, Nov. 3. That will bring the total number of runs each day to 10 from each side, officials said.

Officials stressed that people using the emergency route should expect long waits as the service runs every two hours.
