VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Beach Police are working to keep seniors safe in their homes.
The Operation Lookout program provides for the purchase and installation of large-view peepholes.
Members of the Crime Prevention Unit will install them for free for any Va. Beach resident age 50 and older.
The Vitanzas were having one installed on Thursday.
"I'm from a small town in called Norwich, NY, which is 10,000 people. Never had any significant crime to speak of. I never locked my house, I never locked my car in the 50 years I was there," said Tom Vitanzas.
The first step in the process is to have the Virginia Beach Crime Prevention Unit complete a home security assesment to determine whether you qualify.
If you do, a 180° large-view peephole will be installed in the front door. A Crime Watch Lamp Adapter, 911 Flash-Lite, will be placed into the front porch light. The lamp adapter can turn any light fixture into a life-saving device. With two flips of the existing light switch, it activates a flashing light to signal neighbors or to quickly direct Police, Fire, or EMS to a home.
To set up an assessment, call the Virginia Beach Police Departments Crime Prevention Unit at 385-1068.
