NORFOLK -- One person was shot inside The Gallery at Military Circle Mall in Norfolk Friday afternoon.
According to police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson, an argument or fight erupted inside the mall and several males were involved in a physical altercation and one was shot.
Parker-Chesson says several suspects are in custody.
The victim was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Christian Holloway was at the mall and said it was a very busy Valentine's Day.
"I felt embarrassed that it got out of hand to the point that somebody had to get shot and people had to get detained. There were children in the mall and a lot of elderly people that they had no regard for," Holloway said.
She said a lot of people were thankful they didn't get involved in the crossfire.
"I thank God I waited 15 or 20 more minutes until I came to the mall," Holloway said.
Just hours after the shooting a concerned grandmother dropped off her grandson and his girlfriend to shop.
Dolores Cooper wondered if it was safe for grandson to be at the mall, “I was just trying to make sure it was safe for him to be in there, if not I was going to drag him out!”
The motive behind the shooting is still unclear. An investigation is underway.
