NORFOLK -- A Moyock, NC man died Sunday when his SUV caught fire on I-64 East in Norfolk.

The car burst into flames near Little Creek Road just before midnight. According to Sgt. Anaya, a leaking fuel line sparked the fire and James Anthony Weschler, 38, was killed.

His passenger, Michelle Weschler, was able to escape the inferno, but she was badly injured and was in critical condition.

A passerby apparently stopped to help and rescued the four-year old child from the backseat.

The child was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Crews shut down the interstate for several hours to clear up the scene. The roadway reopened just before 4 a.m. Monday.

Authorities say Weschler's next of kin is in Florida and that he was in the Navy.

Va. State Police initially said Weschler was from Chesapeake and made the correction Tuesday afternoon.  Investigators note he also had a current Chesapeake address on Triple Crown Circle.

According to neighbor Rick Kesten, their Moyock house burned down in January.  He also said there was another brush of death last year.

"His son actually drowned in the pool and Joe had to revive him.  He did.  That was last year," said Kesten.  "I just never seen anybody with such a run of bad luck.  Unbelievable."

Investigators say a leaking fuel line in the couple's 2011 Chevy Traverse caused the vehicle to suddenly burst into flames.
