PORTSMOUTH -- Helping stop hunger starts with one step.
On April 5, people will walk in Portsmouth in the 12th Annual Oasis Social Ministry Walk for Hunger 2014. Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, walkers will leave Oasis Social Ministry at 800 Williamsburg Ave. and will weave through Olde Towne. The walk ends two hours later back at the ministry.
The goal is to alert the public about hunger, an issue that won’t go away, especially in the current economic climate.
The walkers, who are getting sponors, will donating the proceeds to Oasis Social Ministry, which has been helping those in need in Portsmouth, Western Chesapeake and Northern Suffolk since 1970. The non-profit organization operates outreach programs, which include a food pantry, soup kitchen and a thrift store.
