NORFOLK -- Police said 22-year-old Joshua Johnson died after an officer shot him in the parking lot of Wells Fargo at 21st Street and Colonial Avenue in Ghent.
2 officers responded to the bank after he and Virgie May Hairston allegedly tried to pass a fraudulent check, according to police.
According to police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson, "When one of the officers approached the suspects', vehicle the adult male suspect, who was also the driver, put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated striking the officer."
The officer hit by the car was taken to the hospital and is in good condition.
Officials say the second officer did discharge his weapon but was not taken to the hospital for any injuries.
Andrew Scott was at the intersection when the shooting took place and says people in the area were panicking after hearing gunshots.
Several businesses in the area were on lockdown.
Police also arrested Hairston on a charge of conspiring to commit or assist in larceny. According to police, she was a passenger in the front seat of Johnson's car.
An officer is on administrative leave, as is standard procedure for an incident of this nature, police added.
