VIRGINIA BEACH – NAS Oceana is going green.
Officials are replacing old systems base-wide, saving money and helping the environment at the same time.
Deputy Public Works Officer Andrew Porter says there will be lighting retrofits to 71 buildings, AC improvements in 38 buildings and adjustments to 5,400 sinks, showers and toilets to save water.
Oceana says the $44 million change is money well spent.
"Our energy usage per square foot at Oceana and Dam Neck combined will be less than 50 percent of what we used in 2003," Porter stated.
The Navy expects the moves will save $5 million a year.
