NORFOLK--A man pulled from the water in the 1000 block of East Ocean View Avenue in Norfolk has died.

Fire and rescue crews responded to a possible drowning around 5:25 p.m. Thursday.

A witness reported John A. Langston was struggling to walk out of the water when he fell down, and went under, said police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson.

According to Battalion Chief Julian Williamson, several Good Samaritans tried to rescue 47-year-old Norfolk man, pulling him from the water and bringing him to the shoreline.

When fire units arrived, they found bystanders perfoming CPR because Langston did not have a pulse and was not breathing.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue crews took over care and provided advanced cardiac life support. CPR and cardiac monitoring continued to try  to stabilize the man as they transported him to the hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy will be done to determine what caused his death.
