NORFOLK -- A Norfolk-based sailor died during deployment.

The Pentagon says 23-year-old Boatswain's Mate Seaman Yeshabel Villotcarrasco of Parma, Ohio, died from a non-hostile incident on June 19 aboard USS James E. Williams (DDG-95).

The service is investigating Villot-Carrasco’s death as a suicide, according to a Navy official who spoke on background to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The ship was underway in the Red Sea at the time supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The guided-missile destroyer left Naval Station Norfolk on May 30 for an eight-month tour of duty.  The Navy said the crew will take part in security operations, exercises, and combined cooperation operations in conjunction with U.S. Africa Command.
