NORFOLK -- The arrivals terminal at Norfolk International Airport was closed for part of Friday morning as crews investigated a box that got left behind on the baggage conveyor belt.
Airport spokesman Wayne Shank says Transportation Security Administration officials indicated they got two positive hits for explosives, but the Norfolk Police bomb squad's x-rays didn't find explosives and the box was declared harmless.
Airport procedure called for security to treat the box as a potential explosive device, which closed the terminal, Shank stated.
Shank says an airline employee allowed the box to be separated from a passenger.
He added that the passenger who owns the box has been identified and the scene was soon cleared.
Norfolk Police spokesman Chris Amos says the box had been shipped from California to a person who lives in Hampton Roads and contained clothing, a DVD player and miscellaneous items.
The terminal, which closed around 8:00 a.m., had reopened by 9:40 a.m.
