NORFOLK— The Freedom Marathon kicked off Sunday to celebrate the brave men and women in uniform.

The course wound its way from Waterside through Ghent. There were runners of all ages and even riders like Greg Fordham. “For the people who have served, thank you all for all you have done to keep us safe.”

This is the second annual veterans weekend run, and the event grew from 1,500 participants last year to about 2,000 this year.  "Our only goal and our only thing we want to do is help military families. So we thought Veterans Day weekend was appropriate,” organizer Patty Fekete explained.

Tuskegee Airman Ezra Hill was also passing out medals and singing the praises of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.     "I have so much respect for them because over in Iraq they have a whole base with the Red Tails about the Tuskegee Airmen.  They want them to recognize us so they can persevere."
