NORFOLK -- Norfolk City Council appointed Alveta V. Green to fill the Ward 3 seat Friday.
Green served on the Norfolk School Board for seven years. She retired from teaching after 34 years with Norfolk Public Schools and has been active for many years in the civic affairs of the city.
Green previously served as the interim councilmember for Superward 7 in 2010.
City officials say three candidates were interviewed for the vacant seat, which was previously held by Anthony Burfoot.
Burfoot was elected city treasurer in the November general election. Burfoot, a long-time city councilman and vice-mayor, is the city's first African-American treasurer.
