UPDATE 12/14, 4:21 PM: Police have confirmed two vehicles were involved in this crash.

Detective Dorienne Boykin says a man, in a Mercury, was driving south on Battlefield Boulevard. As he approached a line of stopped vehicles, he attempted to merge into the open left lane to pass them.

Boykin says that is when he side swiped another vehicle, a Volkswagen, attempting to do the same thing.

Police say that the driver of the Mercury then veered to the left, leaving the road. He then hit a Verizon pole and finally a tree. Nightingale airlifted him to Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.

Detectives are still looking into who attempted to merge first and who is at fault for this accident.

Battlefield Boulevard South between Centerville Road and Hickory Road remains closed.
