NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News mother was charged with assaulting her 4-year-old son and lying to police about her identity Thursday.
According to police spokesman Harold Eley, officers and a park ranger responded to a complaint about a woman abusing her child at the WaWa at 14803 Warwick Boulavard. Witnesses say the woman was slapping and punching the little boy on the back of the neck and on his rib cage. Officers reported redness on the child's neck.
Eley says the woman told police her name was Jenny Martin and was later identified as 26-year-old Jenay Martines of the 300 block of Advocate Court.
Martines was taken into custody and charged with felony child abuse, false identification to avoid arrest, obstruction of justice, and assault and battery on a family member.
The child's injuries were not life-threatening. Police did not release the child's custody status.
