NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- A Newport News police officer has been convicted of assaulting a woman and brandishing a firearm at a party.

Johnnie K. Hicks received a suspended 30-day jail sentence after being convicted Tuesday in General District Court.

Hicks' attorney, Robert W. Lawrence, said his client will appeal.

The 31-year-old Hicks went to the party on Aug. 21, 2009, to pick up his 2-year-old daughter. Witnesses said he argued with the host, grabbed the woman by the throat and waved a gun around.

Hicks denied that he was armed and said he didn't touch the woman's throat.
