NEWPORT NEWS -- One person was hospitalized after being shot in the leg near the H&H Market in Newport News Wednesday, authorities said.

According to Newport News Police spokesperson, Harold Eley, the man was shot in the upper thigh around 3:45 p.m. at 35th Street and Madison Avenue. 

Eley said the injuries did not appear to be life threatening. 

Police located the male victim lying on the floor of an apartment suffering from a gun shot wound to his left thigh.

Police say the injured man, identified as 20 year old Stephen Tolliver of the 500 block of Bulkeley Place in Newport News, had been standing with a group of six males on the corner of 35th Street and Madison Avenue. 

According to police, two unknown males approached the group and Tolliver pulled a handgun and fired several rounds at the two men. 

One of the approaching men pulled a handgun and fired at Tolliver striking him in the leg.  All the men then left the scene. 

Police have taken out  warrants for Tolliver and  he will be serviced with them once he is released from the hospital.  According to Eley, Tolliver will be charged with 2 counts of malicious assault, 2 counts use of a firearm in the commission of a felony,  reckless handling of a firearm, shooting in a public place and shooting across a road or street.     

Police are still looking for the two men who allegedly shot Tolliver.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
