NEWPORT NEWS -- An inmate collapsed and died during outdoor recreation at the Newport News jail.

Tracy Richardson, 37, appeared to have seizure-like symptoms when he fell to the ground around 9:40 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

The jail's medical personnel did CPR until paramedics arrive to take him to the hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m.

Authorities say an autopsy will be performed to determine Richardson's exact cause of death.

He was waiting to be picked by the Dept. of Corrections for his 50-year-sentence, spokeswoman Kathleen Carey said.

Richardson was sentenced in January after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a Newport News girl 12 years ago. Police said the 10-year-old girl was visiting a relative and Richardson was living in the home at the time.

He was arrested in May 2009.
