VA BEACH-The Navy Tuesday cancelled the popular Oceana Air Show.

The show, featuring the Blue Angels and other air performers, was set for September 20-22 at the Va. Beach base.

In a press release, Oceana said it had no choice because of budget shortfalls due to sequestration.

"The Oceana Air Show highlights the tremendous partnership between the people the Hampton Roads area and our Navy team. It is unfortunate we must cancel the 2013 celebration due to the continuing budget challenges," wrote Capt. Bob Geis, commanding officer of NAS Oceana.

This would have been the 55th Oceana show. It's been cancelled just one other time - in 2001 following the 9/11 terror attacks.

In February, Langley Air Force Base announced it had to cancel the Air Power Over Hampton Roads Show, scheduled for May.

Later Tuesday, Beach City Council will get a report on the sequester's impact on the resort city.

We'll have details beginning on 13News at 5.
