BERTIE CO., NC -- A Bertie High School student has been suspended after a hunting rifle was found in his car, officials said.
Spokesman Brent Todd says the teen was driving his parents' vehicle and likely didn't know the firearm was there.
The rifle never was taken inside the school and no students or staff were threatened.
Todd says ammunition was in the window Thursday, prompting the school resource officer to search the vehicle.
The teen has been suspended from school for 365 days pending investigation by authorities and school officials, but he can appeal the decision.
