DARE CO., NC (AP) -- The National Weather Service is warning of the possibility of coastal flooding in Dare County into next week.

The Weather Service office in Newport says the advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters say winds, dune erosion and high tide will create overwash on N.C. 12 north of Cape Hatteras. The weather service says water is expected on the road a few hours before and after high tides.

The highway was badly damaged by Superstorm Sandy and has been closed at times since the storm.

As of noon Friday, four wheel drive access to and from Hatteras Island on NC 12 was open after being closed Thursday.

It's been open and then closed and reopened all week long as overwash makes the road unsafe to traverse.

When weather conditions are not causing closures, the four-wheel drive route is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Because of hazardous driving conditions, Dare County first responders will escort drivers before dawn and after dusk when the road is accessible to traffic.
