VIRGINIA BEACH -- Not afraid to get dirty when you run? Then the Armed Services YMCA Mud Run is for you.

In its 14th year, the event raises money to help the junior enlisted military families in Hampton Roads.

The 8K endurance race and the mini-mud 1 mile run is taking place August 9 at Joint Expeditionary Base little Creek-Fort Story.

Organizers say the race takes place on the beach and through mud pits, but it's not always muddy if there hasn't been a good rain.

If you're taking part, don't be surprised at the security gate check, where base police will make sure you're not carrying bags or back packs. Organizers say it's in response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Learn more on the 2014 Armed Services YMCA Mud Run Web site.
