MIDDLESEX CO. -- A Middlesex County man has been arrested after admitting to sheriff's deputies that he shot his girlfriend in the head.
According to Maj. M.E. Sampson with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office, 34-year-old Travis Baker was "crying and distraught" when he told deputies he went to see his children around 5 p.m. on September 8 for his son's birthday. Baker said his girlfriend asked him to leave and that's when he "snapped and shot her in the head."
Deputies responded to the 800 block of Urbanna Road and found 33-year-old Wendy Billups of Saluda with two gunshot wounds to the head.
Maj. Sampson says Billups died at the scene.
Baker has been charged with willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation kill and murder in the first degree and use or display in a threatening manner a firearm while committing or attempting to commit murder.
Maj. Sampson told WVEC.com the children are safe and now staying with relatives.
