NORFOLK -- An American Airlines flight bound for Miami from New York had to be diverted to Norfolk International Airport because one of the passengers died.
"About 20 minutes into the flight, the 73-year-old man began to feel ill. There was a doctor on board. CPR was administered and AED on board also was used," spokesman Wayne Shank told WVEC.com.
The crew of Flight #613 made the decision to land the aircraft at Norfolk and the plane touched down around 8:00 p.m.
Other passengers were allowed off the plane while police and paramedics investigated. Personnel were not able to revive the man.
While it's unclear what caused the man to die, there's no indication it was suspicious. His body was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine what caused his death, Shank explained.
The plane remained at Norfolk International Airport Thursday morning.
Shank said information about the other passengers would come from American Airlines.
