VIRGINIA BEACH -- Monday is the holiday in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
There are several events to mark the day, including the annual Memorial Walk in Norfolk. It began at 11:15 a.m. at the Garden of Prayer Church at 1001 Church Street. Hundreds of people walked to the Dr. King memorial on Brambleton Avenue for a ceremony from noon to 12:45 p.m. The event was set to end at 1:00 p.m. after participants march northbound on Church Street to return to the Garden of Prayer church.
Also in Norfolk, a Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center on the campus of Norfolk State University.
In Virginia Beach, Regent University hosted the 28th annual Urban League Breakfast. The 7:30 a.m. event honored people who have made a difference in the community. More than 700 people added the event, including Rep. Bobby Scott (D-3rd District), Rep. Scott Rigell (R-2nd st District) and local mayors.
13News helped sponsor the event and news anchor Lasalle Blanks served as emcee.
In Hampton, the Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings & Provisions, Inc. (HELP, Inc.) is hosting a MLK Day of Service Project. The group will do work on a parsonage that was donated by Pine Chapel Baptist Church to serve as a respite for Homeless Women. Churches and organizations have adopted rooms in the house and will be supplying labor, paint and other materials and furnishings for their selected rooms.
Work on the the property at 1544 W. Queen Street began at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m.
Among those participating are First Presbyterian Church and St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton, Way to Eternal Life Church of Gloucester, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Alumni Chapter in Newport News, the Hampton Branch of the NAACP and the Hiker/Bikers Club.
The Hampton University Office of Student Activities and Pan-Hellenic Council sponsored the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March at 11:00 a.m.. It began at the campus Emancipation Oak on Emancipation Drive and ended t Ogden Hall. A celebratory program immediately followed the march.
