HELMAND, AFGHANISTAN- A Marine from Chesapeake has died in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense identified the Marine as 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Cody S. Childers. He died on Aug. 20, during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Childers graduated from Grassfield High School in 2009, and served in the 2nd Batallion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejuene, N.C.
He enlisted with the Marines in 2008, and attended boot camp at Parris Island the following year.
Childers's aunt, Jayme Montague told 13News that Cody aspired to become a Marine since the age of 12.
Montague also said he loved the outdoors, and enjoyed going hunting and fishing with his father.
