PORTSMOUTH -- Paramedics took a man to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after someone shot him several times in the upper part of his body.

Police found the victim, who is in his 30s, near Randolph Street and Maple Avenue at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

"I sit down to eat my dinner, and all of a sudden, we hear five shots, and the next thing I know, my wife hit the floor. She said, 'Get down! Get down!' Eddie Carter, Jr. told 13News Now. "He was awake. I heard him say, 'Oh, oh, oh!' He was hollering, so that let me know he was still alive."

Officers were not sure of the extent of the victim's injuries.

Detectives encourage anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
