HAMPTON - Fire and rescue personnel faced a challenge Sunday afternoon as they aided an injured man.

Around 4:30 p.m., fire and rescue units responded to a report of a man injured in a diving accident at the far end of Grandview Beach.

The man is 32 years-old. He apparently dove into shallow water, hitting his head. He was able to get himself out of the water, but reported tingling and some loss of feeling, leading his companions to call 9-1-1.

Their biggest challenge was reaching the victim as he was located about a mile from the nearest paved road. They called in an off-road vehicle to retrieve him. He was conscious and talking when they initially treated him on scene.

He was transported using the off-road vehicle to the school maintenance yard on Windmill Point Road, where they were met by Nightingale. This was the closest point where Nightingale could land.

The man was transferred to Nightingale personnel and flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
