PORTSMOUTH -- A man was found dead in a car in Portsmouth early Friday.
Police and medics arrived in the 70 block of Grove Street just before 3 a.m. Det. Misty Holley says the man appeared to have been shot in the upper part of his body.
Family members identified the victim as 64-year-old Anthony Chapman, a Navy veteran who was retired from the shipyard.
Friends say Chapman lived with his mother and would sometimes sit in his car at night to listen to music and meditate.
Early Friday, a neighbor noticed Chapman's brake lights were on and found his body when he went to check on the car.
Mike Terry has lived on Grove St. for the past 11 years. He was alarmed to see a swarm of police officers outside his home.
"This is very unusual. We don't have a lot of crime here," he said.
Terry said many older couples live in the neighborhood and he doesn't feel as safe now.
Everyone on Grove Street hopes police find the person (s) responsible quickly and they want justice for Chapman.
