Man drowns off fishing pier on Eastern Shore

WARDTOWN-  A 30-year-old man drowned off a fishing pier on Morleys Wharf Road in Wardtown after witnesses say he went into the water to retrieve his car keys and clothing.

Virginia State Police were called to the pier at around 1:30 AM Monday morning. Witnesses say 30-year-old Troy Sental Tankard of Nassawadox had gone into the water to get the keys and wet clothing that had been thrown in earlier. Tankard never resurfaced.

Dive teams were called into assist the search and found his body just before 9 AM.

Police say the drowning is considered accidental and there are no signs of foul play.
