NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News man died after he was apparently beaten to death on Saturday.

According to police spokeswoman Holly McPherson, someone approached two officers at the intersection of 32nd Street and Roanoke Avenue around 8:45 p.m. and said a fight had broken out in the 1100 block of 33rd Street.

When officers arrived, 59-year-old Gregory Leander Sanford was found lying on the ground in the backyard.

Officers attempted to speak to Sanford, but he was incoherent and had signs of trauma to his body, McPherson said.

The victim was transported by medics to a local hospital and died Monday evening.

The man who owns the home where the victim was found told 13News Now he heard the beating but was too scared to come out of his house.

Neighbors say they didn't know the victim.

There is no suspect information available at this time.
