VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach man has been arrested in connection with the death of his neighbor's puppy.
According to police, 22-year-old Dionisio Vicente Salazar took the 15-week-old boxer, Ace, from a nearby apartment in the 700 block of Hampshire Lane and was seen running into the street and slamming the dog into the asphalt.
Police say Ace suffered severe injures, was transported to an emergency veterinarian and was later euthanized.
A necropsy revealed the puppy had severe skull fractures.
Ace's owner, Cedric Austin, says he broke down in tears when he heard what happened.
"If he [Salazar] would do that to a puppy, imagine what he could do to a kid or child," Austin said. "He's got to be possessed or on drugs."
Austin says he's not mad anymore, just hurt.
"The only thing I really want to know is why he did it," Austin said.
Salazar has been charged with breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony, larceny of animal and cruelty to animals.
Salazar is currently being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Facility without bond.
Police say additional charges may be forthcoming.
