NEW HAVEN, CT -- A North Carolina man wanted for the murder of his girlfriend and abducting their young daughter has been caught in Connecticut.

23-year old Alexander Zelaya surrendered in West Haven around 9:30 a.m. Thursday after driving to a Walmart on Sawmill Road and asking employees where he could find the nearest police station.

Authorities in Cumberland County, NC said Zelaya told West Haven Police that he was afraid officers would kill him because he had left his daughter at what he thought was a truck stop and had killed someone in North Carolina.

Zelaya is being held without bond and arrangements are underway to have him judicially extradited to North Carolina authorities, said New Haven Police spokesman Sgt. David Tammaro.

He was wanted for the shooting of 22-year old Miriam Laticia Reyes of Fayetteville. He then took their daughter, authorities said.

The nearly two-year old girl was found by a delivery man at the GrandStands Grill in Newport News on Wednesday morning.
