UPDATE: Police arrested 53-year-old Charles Goodman of the 900 block of Mt. Pleasant Road.
Goodman is charged with attempted robbery, making a bomb threat and making a hoax explosive device.
Goodman is being held in the Chesapeake City Jail without bond.
Police have determined the item left at the post office was not a bomb and investigators detonated the package, so people in the area may have heard a "boom" sound.
CHESAPEAKE-A would-be robber left a package at a Chesapeake post office Tuesday morning, forcing police and fire investigators to close off the building.
It happened around 10:00 a.m. at the US Post Office on Battlefield Blvd., across from Walmart.
Officer Kelly O'Sullivan says the man implied the package was a bomb when he didn't get cash.
Police said they were waiting on the bomb squad to get to the scene to check out the package. the FBI and Va. State Police are also involved in the investigation.
On the WVEC13 Facebook page, Denise L-J said the situation has put Appletree Learning Center, where her child goes, on lockdown as a precaution.
The suspect is described as white, 40-50 years old, around 5'3" tall, weighing 130-140 pounds, with salt and pepper hair. He was wearing a dark jacket with blue jeans.
