HAMPTON -- A long time civil rights and community activist has died.

Rudy Langford, the former president of the Coalition for Justice for Civil Rights lost his battle with stomach cancer.

Langford was well known in the area for his work to support those he believed were wrongly accused. He was also known for going after local police departments and elected officials in cases that he thought needed to more transparency.

Hampton mayor George Wallace says Langford was intense and sincere.

"He was good for us and other entities in the community, in terms of making you question your process and your motivation in how you do things. To be sure that you cover all of your bases and what you're doing is just fair."

Wallace believes it will be difficult for someone to fill Langford's shoes with the same sincerity, and not have political gain or self-interest in mind.
