NEWPORT NEWS – Approximately 300 homes in Virginia have been built with Chinese drywall and now some worry that there could be a second generation of victims.

Delegate Glenn Oder (R-94th District) and Senator John Miller (D-1st District) both have bills before the General Assembly that would require builders, realtors, and homeowners to disclose if a home has been built with Chinese drywall.  The intent is to protect future homeowners and renters.

Homeowner Eric Bailey has had his share of troubles with Chinese drywall.  He’s now concerned about future homeowners.

“I think the city should be taking a proactive stance making sure these homes don't become a secondary problem for a second set of families,” Bailey said.

Newport News building official Michael Redifer is aware of the Chinese drywall dilemma, however, he says there’s not much the city can do right now.

“There really isn't any remediating protocol at this time, so any renovation work that is going on in these effected dwellings is really not handled any differently than  one that is not affected,” Redifer said.

A public hearing will be held in Richmond on March 28th for homeowners and builders to give their input on a state remediating plan.
