VIRGINIA BEACH -- Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story held a bell-tolling ceremony Thursday morning to remember fallen service members who were based at JEBLCFS.
80 fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty defending our country since Sept 11, 2001 were honored.
"Those names we spoke today, they made the ultimate sacrifice," said Captain Bob Smith, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two. "And for us just to remember that ultimate sacrifice and remember their names is one of the things we do for them. And that keep their memories alive for their families and their loved ones. And it's one of the thing s we can give them is keeping their memories alive."
The ceremony is in recognition of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.
The commanding officer of Joint Base Little Creek-Fort Story agrees that holding a memorial service like this is the right thing to do.
"This is a huge honor for me," said Captain Frank Hughlett. "We're caught up in our own busy schedules, we're going into the long holiday weekend. It's incredible just to stop for an hour to watch the faces of the folks in the audience, what it meant to them. There's a lot of tears out there today."
