CHESAPEAKE-An investigation is under way into the death of an inmate at the Chesapeake jail.
The man, who hasn't been identified, was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell on Wednesday afternoon, sheriff's officials said.
Staff performed CPR until rescue crews arrived and took him to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He died just before noon Thursday.
The Chesapeake Police Department is conducting an investigation into the death and the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation.
"Deputies do visual checks of inmates at least twice an hour, as required by state law," Major D.A. Hackworth told WVEC.com, "and the deputy had checked on this man 16 minutes earlier."
He said checks are done on a staggered schedule so there is no set time an inmate can expect them and that the inmate was alone in the cell.
Because of the investigations, information about the inmate wasn't being released.
Major Hackworth said there have been no changes in personnel or their duties.
